Located in Springfield, Massachusetts, the Springfield Armory was the primary center of manufacture for firearms used by the US military from 1777, a year after the advent of the revolutionary, until 1968, when it shuttered during the Vietnam conflict. Springfield was the first federal armory, and one of the first factories in the US dedicated to the manufacture of weapons. Today, the armory is preserved as a national historic site, which features the world’s largest collection of historic American firearms.

The Springfield Armory was first used as the US’s primary arsenal during the Revolutionary War. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it became the site of numerous technological innovations that shook the globe, including the development of interchangeable parts, the assembly line style of mass production, and modern business practices such as hourly wages. The numerous firearms manufactured at the Springfield Armory from 1794 to 1968 are known as Springfield rifles.

One of the most famous Springfield rifles is known as the M1903, a five-round, bolt-action, repeating rifle. The M1903 took its design cues from the Mauser M93 and the Dreyse Needle Gun. The Needle Gun, developed in 1841 by Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse, was made famous by the Prussian Army, who used the weapon for most of their campaigns throughout the 19th century. The Needle Gun was one of the first bolt-action rifles to come into existence, and the very first breech-loading rifle to use bolt-action. Bolt-action means that the extraction and ejection of cartridges from the weapon’s chamber are affected by manually manipulating the bolt of the weapon via a handle. When the handle is operated, the bolt is unlocked from the receiver, pulling back to open the breach, allowing the spent cartridge to be extracted and ejected. Upon the bolt being pushed back into place, a new cartridge is loaded into the chamber, and the breach is closed by the bolt locking against the receiver.

The Dreyse Needle Gun had a firing speed of about six rounds per minute, which, in 1841, was extremely fast.

The father of the Springfield M1903 was the Mauser M93, which was used by the Spanish during the Spanish-American War to significantly slow US advancement during the Battle of San Juan Hill. As a result of this battle, a US Army board was convened to study the Mauser. After a period of study, they emerged with a schematic for the Springfield M1903. By 1905, over 80,000 M1903s had been developed. By 1916, the M1903 was the standard-issue service rifle for the US Armed Forces. The 1903 was used extensively throughout World War I and World War II. A modified version of the M1903 called the M1903A4 was the Army’s sniper rifle of choice during World War II.
