Not all pistol holsters are created equal. 1. High quality construction
Perhaps the most important thing to assure yourself of in a holster is construction from high quality materials. This will vary according to the tastes and the intended use of the holster itself, but many holsters are made from heavy leather, ballistic nylon or even Kydex and other tough synthetics. If a holster is not made from quality materials, it can hardly offer any of the following assurances on this list.

2. Retention features
Retention is equally important on a pistol holster and will improve the security and the fit of the design. For example, look for holsters that are designed to fit your specific firearm, and then take note of straps, buckles or other items that enhance the retention of the model.

3. Security features
Security is as important on a holster as retention is and often these two things work hand in hand. Look for holsters that fully enclose the trigger; some holsters are designed to fully enclose the handgun to begin with. In addition, some holsters, especially antique leather holsters, will fold back over the top of the handgun, covering it.

4. Versatility
Not all holsters are designed to be worn at the hip or on the waistband. There are also concealed carry holsters, shoulder holsters, ankle holsters and other types of belt holsters as well. In addition, some can be carried in more than one configuration.

5. Fitness to the firearm in question
A handgun holster won’t be particularly useful to you if your handgun in question will not fit inside of it. Some holsters are specifically designed to accommodate some models of firearm, so be aware of this.

6. Appeal
The last thing to account for is appeal, if that matters to you. If you practice open carry, maybe you want to accent your favorite pistol with an embossed leather holster. That much is up to you.
