Come to Sarco Inc. for all your WW2 Helmet Needs!
Helmets became an important part of armed forces’ body armor during World War I when heavy artillery emerged as a staple of military strategy. Artillery softened positions along the front with rolling barrages of flame and iron, bits of shrapnel bursting forth from the impact points. Because they could not protect their soldiers with suits of steel, saving their wrists and ankles from bullets, German, French, and British army commands developed separately the Stahlhelm, Adrian, and Brodie, which cased the brain in protective metal, and preserved the soldier’s sense of relative safety. The development of WW2 Helmets built upon the innovations demanded by the trench warfare of its predecessor.
The USA’s M1 helmet was composed of an outer, metal shell constructed from non-magnetic Hadfield steel, and called the “steel pot.” It was primarily designed to protect soldiers from shrapnel. Informal testing of the M1 showed that the helmet’s shell was able to stop pistol fire. Two simple adjusting buckles allowed the M1 to fit any soldier’s head, and a removable liner allowed the steel pot to be used as a bucket in the field, so that the soldier could make soup, collect rainwater, etc. The M1 was used by the US for over forty years. Chrome-plated, or painted, versions of the M1 are still used in ceremonial units.
Here at Sarco Inc., we sell the US, M1 style olive drab helmet complete with liner, chinstraps, suspension, and sweatband. Our helmets are in excellent condition, with no major dents, dings, or cracks that you usually find on M1 helmets from the US and Europe. They make a great gift for any veteran, or military enthusiast. We also sell a variety of M1 helmets from other countries, including a European M1 fire helmet, used by fire stations on military bases, an orange M1 civil defense helmet, and a white, Danish civil defense helmet.
The German helmet called the Stahlhelm (German for steel helmet) began its use in 1916, during the First World War. By 1935 a series of design changes reduced the helmet’s production cost, and increase its durability, resulting in the M35 model, which quickly became a recognizable feature of Wehrmacht soldiers. The M35 was designed to protect the brain’s frontal and occipital lobes, which control problem-solving, memory, language, motor function, and vision, without sacrificing its soldier’s view of the battlefield.
